4 Pet Grooming Tips for Dog Owners in Dubai

1. Bathe Dogs Only When Necessary

You probably take a shower every day, and you may be tempted to give your dog the same royal treatment. You feel so refreshed and cool after a shower, so bathing your dog frequently can only be good for your dog, right?

Wrong. Your dog does not need a daily or a weekly bath. They may not even need a bath every two weeks or every three weeks.

In truth, a dog with healthy skin may need a bath only once every three months. We bathe dogs more frequently only because doing so makes them more pleasant companions.

Excessive bathing can cause your dog’s skin to dry out, which could lead to complications. Thus, a bath once every month or every two months is a good frequency, but it can be more frequent or less often than that, depending on a few factors.

a. Hair length

Dog hair traps dirt and accumulates grime. The shorter the dog’s hair, the less dirt and grime it collects. Therefore, short-haired dogs do not need to be bathed as often as long-haired dogs.

b. Skin Condition

If a dog has a skin condition, he may require a strict bathing schedule. For instance, a dog with a skin infection may require bathing once every week. Follow the bathing schedule prescribed by the vet for your dog.

c. Usual Haunt and Activity

Dogs that are almost always indoors do not get as dirty as dogs who are always outdoors. And a dog that mostly lazes around should get less dirt on himself than a dog that goes around fetching things and doing much more strenuous activities.

Therefore, an active dog that is always outdoors needs a bath more often than a primarily sedentary canine that stays inside all the time. Pet Grooming Tips

2. Protect Your Dog’s Ears When Bathing

Dogs have an L-shaped ear canal composed of a vertical canal and a horizontal canal. When water gets into a dog’s ear (and into the deep vertical canal), it can be challenging to get that water out. And this can lead to ear infections.

Thus, when bathing a dog, minimize water incursion into your dog’s ears by using a cotton ball to plug up the entrance to the ear canal. Do not push it in forcefully. You want the cotton ball sitting right at the entrance to the ear canal, not inside it.

And you will need to change the cotton ball a few times during your dog’s bath. Once the cotton ball is wet, replace it, or you risk water coming into the ear canal from the soaked cotton ball.

If you can find earplugs for dogs, those designed to protect the dog’s ears when swimming, you can use those in place of cotton balls.

Furthermore, when spraying water on your dog, be careful about the water direction. Make sure not to point the water into your dog’s ears. And always direct the water flow away from the ears.

3. Rinse Your Dog Many Times

After a bath, make sure to rinse all of the dog soap or shampoo off of your dog’s skin and coat. Left-over soap and shampoo can cause drying and skin irritation.

Thus, rinse everywhere and everything, being very careful that the water does not get into your dog’s ears, of course. And rinse many times.

4. Brush Your Dog’s Hair Regularly

Regularly brushing your dog’s hair helps keep it clean and in good condition.

The frequency of brushing depends on the type of coat your dog has. A short-haired dog, for instance, shouldn’t need more than a twice-a-month brushing. On the other hand, a long and silky coated dog will require brushing three to four times per week. Pet Grooming Tips.

In other words, the more hair your dog has and the thicker his coat, the more often you should brush his hair.

Generally, it would be best to start with a slicker brush. This will get rid of the dirt and debris trapped in your dog’s hair.

The tools you need will depend on your dog’s coat type. Is your dog’s hair long and silky, or is it coarse and short? Does your dog have an undercoat? Is his undercoat soft or thick and heavy?

Depending on your answers, you might need a metal pin comb, a hound glove, a bristle brush, or an undercoat rake.

If your dog has mats, try to untangle them gently using your fingers. Then you can follow up with a metal pin comb, being very careful to start detangling from the edge of the mat and going in only after successfully untangling the edges.

It is best to brush your pet’s coat before a bath. Untangle mats before baths, as water can make matted hair more difficult to detangle.
